Downtown Indianapolis, also known as Mile Square, dates back to the city’s
founding in 1820. Meatpacking and metalworking quickly emerged as the major industries, with the development of automobile manufacturing following quickly behind. The population of Indianapolis surpassed 100,000 in 1890, and the city continued to grow in the 20th century. Today, the city boasts a
population of 887,000 people and has become a bustling urban city to call home.
Since the city’s early days, the downtown district has grown to encompass six-and-a-half square miles in total and now includes nine neighborhoods. It’s home to everything from condos to single-family homes, so you can be sure to find something that best suits you. Mile Square is jam-packed with cultural and social activities, offering locals and visitors alike plenty to do.

Things to Do
Regardless of your interests or activities, Downtown Indy has plenty to keep locals entertained. The city is home to the world’s largest
children’s museum, professional and college sports teams, and miles of recreational trails. Watch the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts play live at
Lucas Oil Stadium. This multi-purpose stadium also hosts a diverse array of national and international events throughout the year.

To get outside, soak up the sunshine by taking a stroll on the
Canal Walk, which cuts through the heart of downtown. With a designated path, this 1.5 mile stretch of the Central Canal provides visitors with stunning views of downtown.
